Dr. Jiang’s expertise is in environmental microbiology, biotechnology, and public health microbiology. She has more than 20 years of research experience in water microbiology and public health, including being a member of the National Academy of Sciences Committee on Water Reuse.  Her research has emphasized the health risk associated with exposure to microbial pathogens, especially viruses, through water recreation and consumption. Her group investigates the transport and fate of viruses in various environments and during wastewater treatment processes. She led projects on wastewater surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 and provided guidance for UC Irvine COVID-19 management during the pandemic. In the past 20 years, Dr. Jiang’s research has provided the foundation for water policy and regulations regarding protection and use of water and is contributing to decisions about the nation’s wastewater reuse. Dr. Jiang’s group has conducted field and laboratory research studies examining water quality in urban areas, developing rapid and sensitive methods for detecting viral pathogens in environmental waters, using human viruses as markers to track viral epidemics in societies, and investigating the efficiency of various engineering water treatment approaches for improving water quality.
